Last Friday, Natasha and I spent the day at Art Toronto at the Metro Convention Centre. We’ve both been looking forward to it, and the fair did not disappoint. Art Toronto is the kind of event that gives you a chance to see a massive variety of artwork and installations in one place – everything from vibrant paintings and intricate sculptures to immersive installations that completely drew us in.
Something that stood out was that some pieces were really bold, demanding your attention with strong colours and textures. Others were more understated but had a quiet power that pulled you in if you took the time to pause and really look. We each gravitated toward different types of work but found ourselves talking about what spoke to us, sometimes lingering a little longer at the same pieces and getting a better sense of why they resonated.
The installations were an experience all their own. They weren’t just pieces on display; they felt like environments the artists had created for us to step into. Some were lighthearted and playful, others a bit more challenging, even unsettling at times, but each one invited us to step out of our usual way of seeing things.
Another highlight of Art Toronto was the sense of community. We met other visitors, who shared their own perspective of the surrounding art. Talking with people who were just as eager to share their thoughts made it feel like we weren’t just looking at art in isolation. We’d exchange nods and smiles, or sometimes join in on conversations about a specific piece, hearing viewpoints that were sometimes different from our own but equally interesting. It added a whole new layer to the experience and brought fresh perspectives that we hadn’t considered.
By the end of our time there, we felt that Art Toronto had given us a lot of inspiration. There’s something about seeing so many ideas and styles that makes you appreciate the creativity and depth behind each artist’s work. It was energizing and gave us a lot to think about. Art Toronto has a way of reminding you why art matters, how it can connect people, and how it encourages us to keep an open mind. It’s an experience we’re already looking forward to repeating next year.
